This week, the Lemons had schools. We visited Guinjata School, where we helped Pascoal teach lessons about the important role fish play in our ocean. The students were so engaged and it was great to see their curiosity and enthusiasm for learning about marine life. We also got creative and painted a mural together, which was heaps of fun and a great way to wrap up the day. After schools on a few of the days, we also helped record data from the fishing competition, which was a new and really interesting experience. On the last day of school, we asked the students to choose one peer they felt had been the most engaged throughout the week to receive a prize. It was amazing to see everyone come together to make the decision and to watch how genuinely happy they were for the chosen student.
The Sandpipers were on field research duty this week, which meant plenty of transects and fisheries work. Our transects were fantastic, full of diverse species that kept us busy with logging. During our fisheries research, we recorded over 400 fish caught at Paindane — a great hands-on experience in data handling. To top off the week, we enjoyed a stunning sunset at Top of the World on Friday, followed by two fun dives on Saturday, where one of us celebrated their 100th dive! We also had a BBQ to mark an amazing four weeks together, as one team member prepared to leave a week early. On Sunday, we headed to Tofo to catch a surfing competition and even tried some surfing ourselves — the perfect way to wrap up an incredible week.
